How does Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder occur?

To understand how I treat people with PTSD, it is helpful to understand how people get this condition in the first place.

At the time of the traumatic event, your brain triggered the “fight or flight” response which then flooded your body with hormones such as adrenaline. This provided your body with the power to fight or run for your life!

For many people, the fight or flight response switches off after the traumatic event has passed.  This may take hours or several days.  For others, this can continue for several weeks and this is known as an Acute Stress Response.  If your traumatic event happened within the last 2 months, then you are likely to be experiencing an Acute Stress Response which for many people will gradually fade away.

However, for about 1 in 3 people, the Acute Stress Response persists and this then develops into Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD.  The fight or flight response doesn’t switch off, it gets locked in place instead.  As a result, adrenaline continues to pump through your body, keeping you in a state of high alert and causing many other problems for you.

As a result, you may feel constantly on guard, experience nightmares and flashbacks or feelings of guilt, panic, anxiety, depression or emotional numbness. You may also notice more frequent headaches, irregular heartbeats, diarrhoea and other physical symptoms.

How can my hypnotherapy for PTSD treatment help you?

As mentioned above, PTSD happens when the fight or flight response gets locked in place somehow.  There will be a reason why this has become locked in place.  This reason is often unconscious and emotionally driven. Once identified, this can be resolved and released, allowing the natural healing process to take place for you.

If just thinking about the event brings up strong emotions, then I’ll use a process known as the “rewind technique” to help reduce or remove the emotional components.  I use this technique to change how you perceive this event in your mind and imagination.

If you feel guilty or angry about what happened, then I’ll help you express and release that emotion.  This will help you to naturally calm down.  After dealing with the emotions, I may use processes to help you see the traumatic event in a different and more distant way, so it naturally blends into your memory bank.

Will your hypnotherapy for PTSD treatment work for me?

Whilst I cannot guarantee a great result for everyone, my approach to tackling PTSD at multiple levels has resulted in a good level of success.  The key components of my hypnotherapy for PTSD treatment process consist of:

  1. Establishing what is unconsciously holding PTSD in place and then releasing or resolving it.
  2. Identifying, expressing and resolving the unexpressed tension and fear.
  3. Changing how your imagination interprets the traumatic event, so that it is harder to bring the incident to mind.
  4. Other processes to help you change your habits, responses, thought patterns and the meaning that the traumatic event once had.

I have found that most other treatment options for PTSD, tend to focus on one of the above areas. I focus on all four.

How many sessions will I need?

As everyone is unique, this will tend to vary.  However, I would normally recommend 2 to 6 sessions spread over a few weeks to tackle this fully.
