Hypnotherapy for OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) can resolve the underlying fear that drives your compulsive behaviour, so you don’t do it anymore

OCD specialist Sydney Hypnotherapy for OCD Hypnotherapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Do you constantly do something, because you’re afraid of what might happen if you don’t?

This could be checking multiple times that your house, apartment or car is locked.  Or continuously checking that a tap or heater is turned off. Maybe it’s continuously washing your hands.  Perhaps it’s having something arranged in a certain order or hoarding things that you don’t need anymore.  If any of these apply to you, then hypnotherapy for an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can help.

It’s normal to occasionally double check that the car is locked, or that heaters and other appliances are turned off prior to going out.

It becomes a problem when you have unwanted and repeated thoughts and feelings that compel you to do certain activities or rituals in response to these thoughts or obsessions.

You carry out these activities or behaviours to get rid of the obsessive thoughts.  However, this only brings temporary relief.  If you don’t do these compulsive activities or rituals, then you fear that something bad will happen.

Hypnotherapy for OCD works by identifying and resolving the underlying fear that drives the compulsive behaviour.

The OCD Vicious Cycle

The cycle starts with an obsessive thought, which leads to an anxiety feeling. The anxiety feeling then drives your compulsive behaviour which brings temporary relief.  Once the temporary relief subsides, your obsessive thoughts returns and the cycle starts again. Hypnotherapy for OCD can help you break this cycle.

If you’re suffering with OCD, then you probably have a thought pattern that goes something like this:
“I’m scared of this … but if I do this, it might not happen.”

Here are some real-life examples:

“I’m scared of causing the house to flood and it being my fault and I’ll feel guilty.  However, if I check the tap several times before I go to bed, it might not happen and I’ll be able to relax”.

“I’m scared of an intruder coming in and attacking me or my family and it being my fault. But if I check that I’ve locked the door 10 times before I go to bed, it might not happen and I can relax.”

How exactly does my hypnotherapy for OCD treatment help you?

All obsessive-compulsive behaviours are driven by an underlying imagined fear that something bad will happen if I don’t do this behaviour or ritual.  This creates your feelings of anxiety.  Unlike other OCD specialists, I’ve realised that there is no point in calming down this anxiety using medication or other approaches.  To me, this is a band-aid or coping mechanism, rather than a long-term solution.

Instead, I will dig deeper into what you are currently imagining.  It is likely that you are imagining that something bad will happen or a fearful outcome.  This may be conscious or unconscious.  Whatever you are imagining will create scary or fearful feelings.  At the moment, your obsessive-compulsive behaviour is your way of preventing the fearful outcome from happening.

The solution is to alleviate the fear.  This will allow the obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviour to naturally stop.  This is what I focus on with my hypnotherapy for OCD treatment process.  I’ll also work on changing any emotionally charged beliefs that are reinforcing the OCD behaviour.

The result is that you will naturally do the behaviour once, feel relaxed and know that whatever you previously feared or imagined won’t happen.

I may give you some assignments between sessions.  A common one is to ask you to do the obsessive behaviour extremely consciously.  Previously, you would have done the behaviour whilst imagining or worrying about the fearful outcome at the same time.  As a result, you don’t remember doing the behaviour, so you do it again and the same thing happens!

By doing the behaviour very consciously, you begin to retrain your brain to focus on the activity completely.  This will stop your imagination running wild and reduce the fearful or scary feelings.

Sometimes, traumatic events from the past or suppressed feelings and emotions can trigger OCD.  If this is the case, then these can be identified and resolved in hypnosis using a very deep and effective transformational hypnotic technique.

Will your hypnotherapy for OCD treatment work for me?

Whilst I cannot guarantee results with everyone, my focus on dealing with the underlying fear has been a winning formula with many of the people that I have helped.  Remove the fear (the root cause of the OCD behaviour) and the behaviour starts to stop quite naturally.

The unconscious mind always has a reason for doing something.  It wants to protect you from danger.  Sometimes the way that the unconscious mind protects us is not logical and doesn’t make sense.  OCD is a good example of that.

In hypnosis, we can identify the reason and find a way to meet it in a more effective and useful way that doesn’t involve the OCD behaviour.  This makes the change lasting and permanent.

How many sessions will I need?

As everyone is unique, this will tend to vary.  However, I would normally recommend 2 to 4 sessions spread over a few weeks to tackle this fully.
