If you are reading this page, then it is likely that you (or a loved one) is suffering from tinnitus. This weird constant sound that no one else can hear. It seems like an invader in your head that you cannot escape from.
Tinnitus is not a disease. It is a set of symptoms that may have many possible causes such as hearing loss, obstructions in the middle ear, head & neck trauma, sinus pressure (from cold or flu) or barometric pressure (from diving).
However, if the tinnitus sound is focussed on and made meaningful to you, then the sound seems to shift to the emotional centre of your brain (known as the amygdala). Once this happens, the tinnitus sound can be sustained even after the original cause has disappeared. This is especially true if you have strong negative feelings about your tinnitus sound. It’s like the more you try to escape it, the more it sticks in your brain.
So what this means is that your tinnitus sound can continue, even after the cause of your tinnitus has been treated (or has healed or recovered naturally).
The good news is that you can control how your emotional brain perceives and reacts to your tinnitus sound. You may not know how to yet. This is where hypnotherapy for tinnitus comes in.

My unique hypnotherapy for tinnitus process works directly to retrain your brain so that the sound no longer seems intrusive. My main goal initially is to help you develop a neutral reaction to the tinnitus sound. You still hear the sound, but it rarely bothers you. This may seem hard to believe but is very possible. I use a number of unique tinnitus hypnosis techniques to help you do this.
Once this happens, you notice the sound much less and focus your mind on other things. The sound no longer bothers you, your brain will notice it less and less. You may even go through long periods of time where you don’t notice the sound at all. Your brain habituates to the sound and once this happens the actual volume of the tinnitus sound can begin to reduce naturally. This can take some time and may not happen with every person that I help.
You may also find that you sleep better, concentrate more easily, focus your mind on other things and start to enjoy life once again.
Can Hypnotherapy really help me reduce my Tinnitus?
Yes, in many cases it can. Tinnitus hypnotherapy primarily helps to reduce your awareness and reaction to your tinnitus sound. You stop noticing it in the same way as you don’t notice the sound of your fridge or the air conditioning sound in an office.
Certain hypnotic techniques, along with the relaxing effects of hypnosis can help reduce your stress levels. Stress can really aggravate tinnitus symptoms and is one of the reasons why tinnitus volume can fluctuate quite widely.
I’ll also work to reduce any underlying emotional issues that may be causing your brain to lock into the sound.
When all the right conditions are in place, the overall level of tinnitus can appear to decrease or quieten, so that it no longer seems intrusive or annoying.
The hypnotherapy for tinnitus principles and techniques are beneficial for all tinnitus sufferers. To increase the results, I will give you self-hypnosis exercises to do between sessions. These are easy to learn and very beneficial in providing symptomatic relief. You are probably already hypnotised to your tinnitus sound to some extent (otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this). Part of the treatment will be to help you de-hypnotise yourself from the sound. So you don’t need to worry about whether you believe you can be hypnotised or not.
Preventing the Tinnitus Vicious Cycle
The more you focus on your tinnitus sound, the more your brain starts to notice it habitually. You’re probably already noticing your tinnitus sound more as you read this page (that’s normal by the way, and once you get in touch, I can explain why).
Adding negative emotions such as anger, frustration, annoyance or desperation will excite the amygdala (the emotional part of your brain) and the tinnitus sound will seem louder. This then creates more negative feelings which makes the sound seem even louder, creating an unhelpful vicious cycle.
If this cycle happens often, the tinnitus sound can become more deeply locked in the amygdala, increasing the chances of the tinnitus sound remaining long term.
So, it’s really important that you seek my help to prevent this vicious cycle from becoming more deep-rooted.
Working with you to reduce stress, sleep better, improve your concentration and allow the sound to fade into the background will all help in achieving a virtuous cycle of tinnitus relief.

As everyone is unique, this will tend to vary. However, I would normally recommend 3 or 4 sessions spread over a few weeks to tackle this fully.
